Tannas Company announces that its Quantum® Pro Oxidation Tester has been approved for use with ASTM D7820, expanding the instrument’s capabilities into engine coolant testing and strengthening Tannas’ portfolio of solutions for evaluating coolant performance.
ASTM D7820 evaluates engine coolant corrosion protection and stability under accelerated thermal and oxidizing conditions using a rotating pressure vessel. ASTM notes that the method is particularly relevant as engines operate under demanding conditions involving high temperatures, hot spots, entrained air and smaller cooling systems.
The addition comes as thermal management is becoming increasingly important for today’s engines, which operate at higher temperatures with smaller cooling systems and greater exposure to air entrainment. In addition, global growth of electrified vehicles requires specialized thermal-management strategies for batteries, power electronics and electric motors.
Quantum Pro Simplifies Set-up Steps
For laboratories conducting ASTM D7820 testing, the Quantum Pro brings several practical features to the process, including automated fill and purge, integrated calibration, dry-cylinder heating, onboard data storage and an integrated touchscreen with live test data. The instrument also provides USB data transfer and automated report submission over Ethernet. These features reduce routine operator steps and simplify data handling without changing the purpose of the standardized test.
ASTM D7820 capability also broadens Tannas’ existing coolant-testing portfolio, which includes the WCT and CDT, giving laboratories additional options for investigating coolant behavior as thermal-management requirements evolve.
“Adding ASTM D7820 to the Quantum Pro reflects where fluid testing is headed,” said Rob Gordon, sales and marketing director. “Coolants are taking on increasingly important roles in transportation and other thermally demanding applications. Our goal is to provide laboratories with practical tools for evaluating these fluids using recognized test methods.”
The ASTM D7820 approval expands the Quantum Pro beyond its established oxidation applications, including ASTM D2272, D2112, D4742, and D7098.
